What is KindRaiser?
KindRaiser evolved from my own experiences in fundraising. I knew I wanted to participate in being part of a solution. Year after year, I signed up with different nonprofits to raise awareness and funds, to support causes that were close to my heart. I genuinely believe together we can make a difference, and that message, fueled my drive to be part of many different charitable events.
After a few years, I started to withdraw from fundraising and even found myself avoiding those who recruited folks like me. I simply had tapped-out my fundraising resources. My family and friends were starting to pre-empt my annual request for donations. I also was fulfilling large fundraising gaps with my own money. I knew this approach was not sustainable. I realized the task of raising money had become my priority and the desire to make a difference was no longer at the heart of my actions. I remember thinking, “How can I make a difference without having to fundraise? Could I do all these amazing things without asking for money?” This is certainly not an optimal strategy in the Nonprofit world, but this was a reflection of how far removed I had become.
Next, I gave myself permission to think way-outside of the box and asked my inner advocate - “what do you love about fundraising, (knowing it’s an integral component for change)?” What surfaced was; I felt a sense of connection with each donation and realized the act of fundraising was grounded in kindness. This was a monumental moment for me. I shifted my thoughts from “How much do I still need to raise” to “Each interaction gives me the opportunity to promote kindness”.
My anchor became kindness and I wanted each person who gave to my cause to feel that in return. I started a campaign called “KindRaiser”. With each donation I would do a kind act on behalf of the person who gave to my cause. Perhaps, I’d donate time at an animal sanctuary, pick-up a couple bags of litter, give cookies to the local Fire Department, or simply buy someone flowers or a cup of coffee. In completing the kind act I would share, “I’m giving kindness on behalf of (name here) who is supporting me in making a difference”.
